Google Pixel Freezes on Lock Screen After March 2026 Update

March Update Caused Freezing Problems
Earlier this month, Google released the March 2026 version drop for the Pixel. This latest update included new features like Circle to Search and newly expanded Magic Cue restaurant recommendations; however, many users also report a third wave of new software issues on their Pixel devices. Google is said to be aware of this matter and has reached out to affected users via the Pixel community team for clarification as to the details.

Which Models Have Been Affected and How Do You Know If Your Model is Affected?
Many Reddit users and other outlets have reported that their Pixel devices are freezing when they are using the lock, or "always on" display feature after the March 2026 update has been installed. Also, users have found that the phones can still perform some functions in the background while their screens are frozen. The affected devices include at least the following: Pixel 10 and Pixel 9 series of devices, Pixel 9a, and the Pixel 8 Pro; other devices may also be affected, but I'm not aware of any such as the Google Nexus devices. One user noted that haptic feedback could occur when tapped and the Gemini shortcut could trigger the AI assistant, while the display remained frozen. In most instances, users are forced to perform a hard reboot by pressing and holding the power and volume up buttons.

Unconfirmed Fixes and Workarounds
There is no confirmed fix at the moment. The problem has generated debate on Reddit, with some suggesting that installing a Google Play system update may help, while other users have reported no success at all. A workaround mentioned by some users is to roll back to the last known good version of the Pixel firmware, the February 2026 update (BP4A.260205.001.A1), but the problem reportedly returns every time the March update is installed.

Pixel Updates Issues; Background
While it’s important to point out that this isn’t the first time problems have been caused by Pixel firmware updates, earlier in 2021, many users of this model encountered Wi-Fi connectivity issues caused by the first Pixel Drop of 2021 in January. Many users reported an inability to connect to Wi-Fi because of complete and total drops of Wi-Fi as opposed to being unable to scan or connect to a network or use Bluetooth. In addition to connectivity issues, users reported other bugs such as camera failures, broken Settings search, Network and Internet pages failing to load, and increased idle battery drain.

Technical Notes and Next Steps
Officials involved said that the Pixel community team is reaching out to affected users to collect more details to assess the scope of the issue. There is currently no public timeline for a fix. Those affected are advised to monitor official Pixel channels for updates.
