Sony WF-1000XM6 Leaks Point to Faster Chip and 8 Mics Ahead of February 12 Launch
Sony plans to unveil a new wireless earbud model on February 12, with early leaks outlining a slate of upgrades for the WF-1000XM6. A Dealabs report and other circulating leaks describe a faster chip, more microphones for noise reduction, and revised audio hardware, though Sony has not officially confirmed the specifications. The February 12 event is expected to present the WF-1000XM6 as the company’s next flagship in its wireless audio lineup.
New hardware improvements
The leaks say the WF-1000XM6 will use a QN3e processor that is described as three times faster than the previous generation. The device is also said to have eight adaptive microphones for improved noise reduction, two more than the six on the WF-1000XM5. In addition, the leak points to upgraded audio hardware, including a new speaker, an improved DAC, and an enhanced amplifier.
The report highlights that the items related to controlling noise will be "adaptive noise cancellation optimisation" and have a better Ambient Mode with three different automatic modes. The audio will possibly feature HD Wireless supporting LDAC, "DSEE Extreme" upscaling of sound files, and a 10-band equaliser for finer control over sound customisation. Call quality is anticipated to be supported with a microphone operating using 'beamforming' technology; 'bone conduction' technology; reduction of wind noise; and AI-assisted processing of calls.
Design and connectivity updates
Design refinements are described as an optimised ergonomic shape, better airflow management, and insulated ear tips. Sony may add a fit test and fitting guide through the Sound Connect app, available on Android and iOS. Controls are expected to include touch input, voice control, microphone management, and smart gestures. Additional features may include 360 Reality Audio with head tracking, LE Audio, Auracast, Adaptive Sound Control, Quick Attention mode, Background Music effect, and Speak to Chat.
Connectivity options are tipped to include Bluetooth, multipoint pairing, Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair. The earbuds are expected to carry an IPX4 water resistance rating. Battery life is said to reach up to eight hours on the earbuds, with an additional 16 hours through the charging case, alongside fast charging and wireless charging support. Box contents may include a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable and ear tips in four sizes, including SS, S, M and L.
Sony has confirmed it will unveil a new wireless audio product on February 12 at 8am PT, which is 9:30pm IST. The device is widely expected to be the WF-1000XM6, based on leaks and teaser design. Leaks indicate the earbuds could arrive in black and silver colour options, with a potential third Sandpink variant, and may feature a redesigned, more compact charging case compared to the WF-1000XM5.
A Thai retailer listing reportedly showed the WF-1000XM6 could cost THB 11,990, while leaks suggest a price of EUR 299.99 in Europe and $329.99 in the US.
Background context: The WF-1000XM6 details reference the WF-1000XM5 as the current generation, which carries six adaptive microphones, suggesting a notable upgrade in microphone count and processing power for the next flagship if the leaks are accurate.
