Zeiss Aatma Lenses Debut in India With Retro Design

Zeiss unveiled its Aatma cinema prime lenses in India on Tuesday, expanding the German optics maker's cinema lineup. The nine full-frame prime lenses in the Aatma series offer fixed focal lengths that range up to 135mm, with delivery set to begin through select authorised Zeiss Cinema retailers and sales already enabled via the Zeiss online store. Pricing for the nine lenses was not disclosed at the time of the announcement.

Availability and Pricing

Available for purchase in India through the Zeiss online store, the Aatma primes can be ordered now. Delivery is scheduled to start in June via selected Zeiss Cinema retailers. Buyers can opt to buy the full set of nine lenses or purchase individual lenses depending on their production needs. Pricing for the lenses has not been revealed publicly.

Design and Optical Characteristics

Zeiss positions the Aatma line with a retro design inspired by the 20th century. The full-frame cinema primes include fixed focal lengths of 18, 25, 35, 40, 50, 65, 85, 100, and 135mm. Zeiss says the lenses are capable of shooting organic, emotionally resonant imagery. The design aims to enhance texture and atmosphere, with stated reductions in contrast, smoother focus transitions, and an enhanced bokeh effect, complemented by a subtle soap-bubble look.

The Aatma full-frame primes use the T1.5 aperture and leverage Zeiss optics to support cinematic applications. The lenses are said to deliver image rendering that emphasizes textures and atmospheres, enabling stylised precision in film production.

The company also notes that the Aatma series is targeted toward cinematographers and filmmakers who need a retro aesthetic combined with modern lens data capabilities.

Additionally, Zeiss said delivery of the new T2.2 lenses will begin soon.

The company said that the latest Zeiss Aatma series lenses are capable of shooting “organic, emotionally resonant imagery”, which will be useful for most cinematic applications. The image rendering enhances textures and atmospheres, which allows filmmakers to bring stylised precision to film production.

Lastly, the tech firm has also revealed that it will start delivering the Zeiss Panoptes 65 full-frame T2.2 aperture prime lenses, including 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, 55mm, 70mm, 90mm, 110mm, 135mm, and 180mm fixed focal lengths, in the summer.
