Airtel Unveils AI Powered Fraud Alerts for OTP Bank Scams
Airtel Launches AI Powered Fraud Alerts for OTP Bank Scams
Airtel has rolled out a new Fraud Alerts system that uses artificial intelligence to warn subscribers about OTP related bank scams. The company said the feature is already live in Haryana and plans to roll it out to all Airtel users across India over the next two weeks. Officials involved said the system activates after a user receives an OTP via SMS and identifies potentially risky incoming calls, delivering a real time alert to deter users from sharing banking transaction OTPs on a call.
The aim, according to Airtel, is to intervene in the moment and reduce the likelihood of fraud by prompting users to exercise caution before consenting to OTP based actions while on a call. The company noted that bad actors often exploit the urgency surrounding OTPs for day to day services, including delivery, to coax users into revealing banking information.
Background and Context for Airtel Fraud Protection Tools
Airtel's Fraud Alert system is part of their package of innovative products that help customers identify scams and spams. In September 2024, Airtel started using AI technology to help identify spammy call and SMS messages and for additional features that were announced in April 2025 — these features now also support Indian regional languages. In May 2025, the company launched its Fraud Detection Solution for OTT platforms and social media apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
The rollout comes amid growing concerns about digital fraud. The Mint reported that the Supreme Court noted Indians lost over Rs 54,000 crore to digital arrests, where victims are coerced into sharing banking information and OTPs or transferring money to a fraudster s account.
Airtel described the Fraud Alerts as a real time protection mechanism on its network, designed to reduce the chances of successful OTP related fraud by interrupting risky exchanges before a banking transaction can occur. The company did not quantify coverage beyond the Haryana rollout but indicated the nationwide deployment would proceed over the subsequent two weeks.
While the system relies on AI to flag potentially risky situations, Airtel said the approach complements existing layers of security and user awareness programs. The updates reflect a broader push by telecoms to apply AI driven protections across calls, messages and online interactions to curb fraud and scams.
Industry observers noted the rapid pace of Airtel s feature releases across multiple platforms, including SMS, calls, OTT apps and social networks. The company suggested that the Fraud Alerts will expand in scope as it extends the service regionally and nationally.
- Technical focus: AI driven detection of OTP related banking scam risk on incoming calls
- Current rollout: live in Haryana; nationwide rollout planned within two weeks
- Trigger mechanism: alert triggered after OTP is received by SMS
- Protection scope: real time on network alerts to deter sharing of OTPs
- Related features: prior AI spam detection for calls and SMS; fraud detection for OTT apps and social platforms
As the rollout continues, Airtel said it will provide updates on the nationwide deployment and continue to refine the AI model to better identify potentially risky interactions around OTPs and banking transactions.
