Apple Said to Open Siri to Third Party AI Assistants

Apple is reportedly preparing a major change to Siri that would let the assistant work with third party AI chatbots beyond ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the system could arrive with iOS 27, alongside iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, and may allow users to route queries to services such as Google Gemini and Claude through Siri.

The reported system is internally referred to as Extensions. It would let users enable or disable AI services from a dedicated settings menu, and also point them to an App Store section for downloading and managing compatible AI services.

Extensions Could Expand Siri's AI Role

At present, Siri can forward requests to ChatGPT only when asked explicitly. Under the reported Extensions system, users would be able to choose which AI service handles each query without needing manual prompts each time. The change would move Siri closer to a broader hub for AI assistants rather than a single-partner setup.

Gurman also said the approach could help Apple generate more revenue from third party AI subscriptions through the App Store. The report says Apple is rebuilding its AI platform around Siri and working on deeper system integration, including contextual awareness that could let the assistant access personal data and return more context-based responses.

There is also said to be a standalone Siri app in development for iPhone, iPad and Mac. The app would act as a central place for using the voice assistant and is reported to include a chat-like interface with past conversations shown in a list or grid. It may also allow users to pin conversations, search previous chats, upload documents and photos for analysis, and switch between text and voice modes.

The reported changes place Siri at the center of Apple’s wider AI plans as the company looks to update the assistant’s functions across its devices. The details in the report point to a staged shift in how Siri could work with outside AI services, though Apple has not publicly confirmed the system described by Gurman.

There is also believed to be a standalone Siri app in development, too. It would serve as a centralised hub for interacting with the voice assistant, featuring a chat-like interface that displays past conversations in a list or grid. The in-development Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac may allow users to pin conversations, search through previous chats, upload documents and photos for analysis, and switch between text and voice modes.
