Apple Simplifies MacBook Purchases with Step by Step Configuration
Apple has subtly revamped its online store, streamlining the Mac purchase experience. The goal? To cut down on the confusion that often accompanies checkout, particularly when it comes to configuring a Mac. The updated Apple Store now offers a more guided approach for Mac and MacBook purchases, mirroring the way iPhones and iPads are currently sold online. So, what's different? Previously, buying a Mac meant wading through a maze of configuration choices – processor, memory, storage – all crammed onto a single page.
What changed in the store experience
Up until now, the traditional process of buying a Mac involved navigating through multiple configuration options, such as processor, memory, storage, and, on a single page. For buyers who were not technically proficient, it made a simple purchase highly complex. The Cupertino-based tech giant has now designed the Mac purchase flow to prioritise simplicity.
With the new interface, after selecting the base model you will then start to customise your new product one step at a time. The product can be customised after selecting the model. You start customisation by adding the base colour, the processor variant, and the power option. The next step in customisation would include the amount of unified memory (RAM), the size of the SSD, type of stand and Ethernet.
The updated Apple Store interface also presents compatible accessories, like the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. Creators who use Apple's suite of apps can bundle Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro licenses via the page, and it will come pre-installed on their Mac.
Additional context and next steps
Officials involved described the change as a move to simplify checkout and improve clarity for buyers. The update aligns the Mac shopping experience with the approach used for iPhone and iPad models on the store. The changes are now live on the Apple Store, with emphasis on a guided purchase flow and included software options.
Key steps in the new configuration flow
- Base model selection
- Colour selection
- Processor variant and power option
- Memory and SSD storage choices
- Stand type and Ethernet capability
- Accessory pairing and bundled software
