iPhone 18 Pro Tipped for a Smaller Dynamic Island in a Move No One Expected
iPhone 18 Pro Tipped in new reports as Apple is reportedly testing two different front display designs, including one that could shrink the Dynamic Island. Fresh details also suggest the company may keep the rear camera layout largely unchanged while exploring minor refinements.
Apple Tests Two Front Design Options
Apple is said to be working on two possible display designs for the iPhone 18 Pro, according to tipster Digital Chat Station in a Weibo post. One of the options keeps the existing screen mould, while the other introduces a smaller Mini Dynamic Island. The change is reportedly linked to moving some Face ID components under the display.
Per earlier reports, this approach could reduce the size of the Dynamic Island by about 35 percent compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. Past leaks have also suggested that the cutout could shrink from 20.7mm on the iPhone 17 Pro models to 13.49mm on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The tipster says Apple has not made a final decision and is still A/B testing between the two designs. If the company chooses to reuse existing moulds, the Dynamic Island may remain close to its current size. That would leave one of the more noticeable rumoured changes off the table.
Rear Camera Layout May Stay Familiar
In a follow-up post, the same tipster claimed that the rear camera layout on the iPhone 18 Pro is unlikely to change in any major way. Apple is said to be continuing with an iterative design approach this year, with the handset expected to retain the rectangular camera plateau from the previous generation.
Minor updates to materials and the overall finish may still happen, according to the leak. Changes to colour options could also be part of the plan, though the post does not give specifics.
The claims line up with an earlier Bloomberg report from Mark Gurman, which said Apple was planning a redesigned Dynamic Island for the iPhone 18 Pro models and that it would be smaller than on the iPhone 17 Pro units.
The Dynamic Island, a centred pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display, first arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in September 2022, replacing the wider notch used on earlier models. Apple has reduced its size in previous generations, but those changes have been gradual rather than major.
The iPhone 18 series is rumoured to launch later this year alongside Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone. Recent talk around the lineup has suggested that, while internal changes are expected, the design may not be drastically different from the iPhone 17 Pro models. The latest leak, however, points to Apple testing more than one option for the front and rear of the iPhone 18 Pro before settling on a final version.
For now, the reports remain at the rumour stage. The details point to a possible smaller Dynamic Island, a familiar rear camera plateau, and modest changes to materials and finish, but Apple has not confirmed any of the claims.
