Snap forms Specs Inc subsidiary to lead AR glasses push
Snap announced the creation of Specs Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary focused on the augmented reality smart glasses division. The move aims to sharpen operational focus and give the company capital flexibility as it readies its first consumer-focused hardware under the Specs brand.
Corporate restructuring and funding options
In a newsroom post, Snap said Specs Inc. will work on partnerships and could raise minority investment in the future, enabling capital flexibility for developing AR glasses as a distinct brand.
AR glasses timeline and product context
The company is advancing toward its first major consumer hardware launch. At the Augmented World Expo, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel confirmed that AR glasses dubbed Specs would launch this year and arrive in the coming months.
Snap has previously produced AR glasses under the Spectacles line, which is developer-exclusive. In 2024, Snap launched the fifth generation of Spectacles.
Specs is described as a wearable computer with see-through lenses that augment 3D digital objects in the real world. It can be controlled via hand gestures and voice commands and will include integrated artificial intelligence capabilities and a built-in AI assistant. Snap said the device will be powered by a first-of-its-kind Intelligence System and is focused on task automation.
